We
are honoured that many of you and your managers helped us to advertise
this course by sending information to your groups. One email went out
with the title "Compassion Fatigue Course" and we want to make sure that
we let you know that while the inspiration for writing this course was
working with those of you who have experienced compassion fatigue, the
course itself is not a deeper exploration of compassion fatigue, but
more the parts of our lives it has kept us from. This is a course
designed to help you live your best life and while healing from CF and
taking better care of yourself is a goal totally on side with the
course, learning more about CF is not the aim. Should you feel you
signed up for this course in error, please let us know. To see a
description of the course visit www.dreambigstartsmall.ca.
For those of you who are wanting more CF resources AND also want to
take this course, Françoise will be offering a free additional call this
Fall. Stay tuned!
Getting Ready
The best way to get the most out of this course is to prepare a space and time dedicated to this course.
To get the most out of this telecourse, we recommend that you:
1) Buy a journal/notebook specifically
dedicated to this course. You can find fun and funky ones in your local
dollar store, no need to break the bank. But make sure you select a
journal/notebook that you will enjoy working in. If you are someone who
always enjoyed the back to school vibe, get yourself an old Hilroy
notebook and cover it in stickers. Whatever works for you! Each week
you will receive handouts which you can save to your computer and fill
out, or print and keep in your journal; some people like to choose a
large journal so they can pop those handouts in, but other people like
smaller journals that can easily be carried about.
2) Find a quiet spot to listen to the calls: Many
of you will likely be listening to the calls from work, perhaps on your
lunch hour (or during work if you have an amazing visionary manager who
gave you permission to do that). Think about the environment in which
you will be while taking part in the calls - will you be distracted or
interrupted? Could you find a more private space for the length of the
calls? Some people like to talk themselves through some of the
exercices, and so consider this as you choose your spot. (The phone
lines are muted, so don't worry - we won't be able to hear you!)
3) Make a commitment not to multitask during the calls: Many
of you will be participating in the calls while sitting at a desk with a
computer close at hand. Please make a commitment to turn off your
screens and mobile devices for the hour and a half of of the class. If
you find it difficult to focus on a call without a visual aid or
something to focus on, consider downloading some colouring pages or
doing a few mandalas during the course. Or buy yourself some playdough
and engage your hands while you engage your mind. You will also have the
opportunity to write and fill out work sheets and write in your journal
during the exercises.
4) Try a brief relaxation activity before starting the call:
If you work in a hectic environment, it might be tough to transition to
sitting and focusing for 1.5 hours midday. Try this brief relaxation
activity before joining the call (and then, don't forget to turn off
your computer! :-)
or download a short relaxation activity on your ipod/computer.
You can find many free or very inexpensive ones on itunes such as:
Stress Relief with Dr Siddharth Ashvin Shah "Splendor of Meditation"
Keep Calm with Classical Music
For those of you with an ipad or ipod, Joan Borysenko has a new app called "Meditations for Relaxation and Stress Reduction" that is only $5.99 and offers short meditation exercises etc.
Not sure what you dream is yet?
You are in good company, half of your fellow participants identified that they do not yet have a dream to work on.
Don't
panic, there are so many ways to take advantage of this course. For
starters, you will have the opportunity to download each session so you
can even use the exercises again if you come up with another goal. Many
of my clients come with one goal and as coaching continues they develop a
new goal, and that can happen in this course too. While each week CAN
build on the next, they can also be used independently. For example, you
may find that you are feeling so burned out when you start the course
that your goal is to "take better care of yourself", but as the course
progresses you begin to feel inspired to play a bigger game, live your
best life. As you validate the place inside you that wants to come
alive, it will respond by offering you new ideas and suggestions.
Need help with the dream? Book a Coaching Session
You can also book a coaching session prior to the beginning of the
course if you feel you want some help solidifying something. Robin has
slots designated for this group over the next three weeks and can take
clients in person or over the phone: visit www.lifeinspired.ca for more details or contact Robin directly by email.

Tips for coaxing out the dream
Read
through the list and see if any of these strategies appeal to you and
your dream...don't be afraid to make a strategy your own, or combine
them, there are no rules. You can't do it wrong!
- Each night before you go to bed, set your journal on the bedside table with a pen and say to your sweet self: "self, if you have something to say, I'm listening". Sometimes the simple act of opening yourself up to the possibility of having a dream is enough to help it emerge. Think of your dream as a person, if a person's experiences lead them to believe that nobody is listening, eventually they get pretty quiet right? Be gentle and curious. Create a space for your dream to begin to peek through - your journal is a good spot.
- Walk in the woods, go for a run, listen to music that makes you feel inspired, and listen to your inner voice. What do you want? What do you want? What do you want? That's the question, and many people never hear it.
- Start with a TO-DO list. I know, you know how to do that right? No problem, it's a list of boring tasks and responsibilities maybe, but also there will be some bucket list type stuff, if you write long enough. Set a timer for 10 minutes and write a list of all of the things you want to do. Circle the items that feel most meaningful and important. Don't edit yet. We will work through goals and make sure they are reasonable and realistic, but most people edit all of those goals out before they even get started, using RULES and CRITICISM.
- Read: There are so many great books on the topic. Robin loves Finding your Own North Star by Martha Beck.
- Try a personality inventory like the MBTI (Myers Briggs Type Indicator) or the Enneagram. This is a great way to remind yourself of all of your strengths.
- Make a list of things you loved doing when you were little. Don't edit!
- Music is a powerful force and a favourite tool for dreams and dreamers. Here is one we like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHkwdPwLevQ
All human beings are also dream beings. Dreaming ties all mankind together. Jack Kerouac
How the teleclasses will work:
The teleclasses will be offered by phone, live from 12:00-1:30pm EST on each class day (see below for schedule). The calls will also be recorded and made available to you. That way, if you are not able to join us during the live class time, you can still enjoy the course at your own pace and schedule.
